Catalyst by Wellstar Invests in Gabbi to Drive Early Breast Cancer Detection for Young and Underserved Women

Catalyst by Wellstar is pleased to announce its latest investment in Gabbi, a healthcare technology company on a mission to make late-stage breast cancer a thing of the past. As part of our ongoing efforts to raise awareness around women’s health issues, we are investing in Gabbi to ensure more young women and those from underserved communities receive breast cancer screenings. Gabbi seeks to make late-stage cancer obsolete by catching cancer diagnoses early, offering screenings to women in their twenties and thirties, as well as to Hispanic and African American patients, who often face disparities in access to timely and accurate diagnoses.

Gabbi’s cutting-edge AI platform, trained on a diverse dataset, offers breast cancer screenings to women who are often overlooked, including those in their teens, twenties, and thirties, as well as Hispanic and African American women. Traditionally, breast cancer screening has been recommended to begin at age 50, but with breast cancer rates rising by 13% in women under 50 from 2000 to 2019, there is an urgent need to begin these screenings earlier. Additionally, women under 40 with cancer have a 40% higher risk of death due to delays in diagnosis and care. Gabbi not only accelerates diagnosis—up to seven times faster than traditional methods—but also aims to close the healthcare gap by making early detection accessible to all.

Dr. Paula Greaves, Chief, Women’s Health Service Line at Wellstar, is enthusiastic about the investment, “I’ve seen firsthand the critical role early detection plays in saving lives, particularly when it comes to breast cancer. Far too often, younger women and underserved communities do not have access to the screenings and resources they need to detect breast cancer early.

“This investment in Gabbi is a game-changer for women across Georgia. By leveraging innovative technology and ensuring early detection is accessible to all, we are not only improving outcomes but also empowering women to take charge of their health. I’m excited to see Wellstar take this bold step, reaffirming our commitment to world-class care for every woman, every time,” added Preston Hendrickson, Assistant Vice President, Women’s Health Services at Wellstar.

A pilot project is currently in development to leverage Gabbi’s technology within Wellstar’s women’s health service line.

“At Catalyst by Wellstar, we are constantly seeking out innovative solutions that can transform healthcare and improve outcomes for our communities. By making early detection more accessible and accurate for younger women and underserved groups, we are addressing a critical gap in breast cancer screening. This investment not only aligns with our mission to enhance patient care but also has the potential to significantly improve healthcare outcomes for women across Georgia and beyond. We are proud to support Gabbi in its mission to revolutionize breast cancer detection,” said Dr. Hank Capps, FAAFP, EVP and Chief Information and Digital Officer for Wellstar Health System, and President of Catalyst by Wellstar.
