Partnership
In 2022, Wellstar Health System and Catalyst by Wellstar identified an exceptional opportunity to introduce virtual reality (VR) immersive learning to employees through “Emotional Intelligence: Leadership in Times of Change,” developed by Moth+Flame. A learner must navigate conflicts between team members and leaders with the support of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) coach that guides participants throughout the experience, providing instruction and opportunity to practice having tough conversations.
Learners are encouraged to build composure and gain practical experience in a highly realistic scenario by navigating difficult conversations and testing one’s resiliency in an emotionally charged environment. Through the VR simulation, learners are placed in a healthcare workplace with managerial responsibilities and exposed to a typical situation of balancing team members’ emotions while navigating change. Upon learning about a newly created position within the executive leadership team, the learner must navigate through conversations with three fictional teammates, attempting to alleviate their fear and confusion, engage in active listening, and convince each person to look at the change through a positive lens.
This 30-minute VR training on emotional intelligence was more effective & comprehensible than two full days of in-person training.

This experience helps learners develop strategies to build situational awareness and prioritize composure, critical thinking, and conscious emotional responses when engaging in triggering conversations. By gaining conversational expertise and knowledge, a person will know how to respond in real scenarios with the confidence to interact appropriately and strategically. Through this VR simulation, learners are placed in a safe space to practice these challenging but necessary conversations.
Benefits
Recent developments in this space have enabled the immersive learning modality to be far more insight-driven, and cost-effective at scale. Specifically, Moth+Flame’s front-end experience leverages AI that accurately captures and interprets the learner’s communication style, enabling a more effective measurement of empathetic behavior.
In short, this will ultimately increase learner engagement and provide insights into previously unidentifiable trends, which will allow organizations to augment or enhance training and development programs more effectively.
Results
As of early May, sixty-four employees from various levels engaged in “Emotional Intelligence: Leadership in Times of Change.” Participants earned an average empathy score (AES) of 89.42 out of 116 or 77%, indicating a culture where people usually say the right things when having difficult conversations. However, there is room for improvement achieved through higher levels of engagement, self-awareness, and opportunities to practice active listening.
Future
Wellstar continues to explore opportunities to partner with Moth+Flame and bring this cost-effective, scalable learning solution to more employee groups. By offering learners this training, staff are more knowledgeable, increase their active experience, and get to explore and practice complex concepts in a safe space. Supplying effective training to team members is not only good for healthcare, but for overall employee engagement and wellness. With technology that is both fun and practical, teams find the value and support they need to continue providing better healthcare.
